“Distance learning for everyone!” The positive impact of the INSCHOOL project-supported activity in the Slovak Republic

As part of the Joint EU&CoE INSCHOOL project implementation in the Slovak Republic, the Stefana Nahalku Primary School with Kindergarten in Liptovská Teplička, has implemented an activity called “Distance learning for everyone!”

The activity aimed at ensuring children's access to material and technical support in distance education. During lockdown, children from the disadvantaged local community of Liptovská Teplička struggled to obtain access to the necessary tools and aids to participate in online education, which was established as a new format for the general school population. The activity was thus put in place in full compliance with local anti-pandemic measures to counter educational exclusion by giving students the possibility to work with tablets at home but also at school.

For the first week, pupils attended school in groups and learned how to use a tablet and the ZOOM application. They also learned how to do tasks and homework online on the Edupage platform. At school, the students were guided through the learning process by Mgr. Vernarecová, Mgr. Bulavova, Mgr. Chovanová and Mgr. Kušniráková. In the local community, the students were helped by Mgr. Vernarecová and some parents. In total, “Distance learning for everyone!” involved 13 pupils, of which 9 belonging to the Roma community, 13 parents, 4 teachers and one ICT administrator.

Both the children and the teachers benefited from the activity. Most notably, the teachers reported that it stimulated attendance to online classes on the part of the children, who were able to keep up with the curriculum and happy to discover the new possibilities granted by the virtual world. In addition, the activity was successful in building trust between the teachers and the families and improving parents’ attitudes toward the school environment. Finally, the competencies acquired by both children and teachers, thanks to this experience, will prove useful in the event of a new wave of Covid-19, and the tablets are now regularly utilised in the classroom and rotated among the pupils.

The activity presented is part of an educational and grant support provided to Stefana Nahalku Primary School with Kindergarten in Liptovská Teplička with the aim of supporting their efforts in further development of an inclusive teaching environment organised within the framework of the European Union & Council of Europe Joint Project “Inclusive Schools: Making a Difference for Roma Children” (INSCHOOL).
