Representatives from Serbia’s Ministry of Sport and the Government Agent before the ECtHR, as relevant government officials, and experts from the Council of Europe's Department for the Execution of Judgment of the European Court of Human Rights, gathered in Belgrade on 24 September 2024 to discuss progress on the execution of a European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) judgment. The judgment addresses the discriminatory denial of financial awards to blind chess players, which their sighted counterparts received for similar international achievements.
The meeting focused on finding solutions to fully implement the Negovanović and Others v. Serbia judgment. Government representatives outlined the steps taken so far, while the Council of Europe offered guidance on overcoming remaining challenges to ensure equal recognition for blind chess players in Serbia.
This event is a part of the ongoing efforts of the actions "Strengthening human rights protection in Serbia" to provide assistance to the state institutions in executing judgments of the ECtHR in relation to Serbia by enabling a platform for exchange of information and co-ordination.
The action is a part of the joint European Union and Council of Europe programme “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Türkiye”, implemented by the Council of Europe.
