Serbia receives recommendations for effective radicalisation prevention and addressing violent extremism in prisons

More than 30 recommendations referring to enhancement of the Serbian penitentiary capacities in preventing and addressing radicalisation and violent extremism in prisons were voiced at a Round Table on 29 January in Belgrade, organised by the European Union and the Council of Europe and supported by the Ministry of Justice of Republic of Serbia.

The recommendations stemming from the Council of Europe fact-finding mission in Serbia, which took place in November 2019, reflect the needs for upgraded standard operating procedures and development of specific screening, risk and needs assessment tools and rehabilitation programme for this type of offender, which were acknowledged by the participants as the priority needs to receive technical assistance from the Council of Europe.

The Round Table gathered more than 20 participants: prison management, security, rehabilitation and treatment staff, representatives from Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Interior, civil society and justice sector.

This activity was organised within the scope of the regional action “Enhancing penitentiary capacities in addressing radicalisation in prisons in the Western Balkans” that is a part of the joint European Union and the Council of Europe programme “Horizontal Facility for Western Balkans and Turkey 2019-2022”, implemented by the Council of Europe.
