The concentration of media ownership has been a growing concern for media pluralism and a potential threat to freedom of speech in Europe. Thus, addressing this issue within the joint EU and the Council of Europe Horizontal Facility II programme,  an online workshop was held today to discuss the challenges related to the concentration of media ownership in the new media environment, as one of the main regulatory issues since the liberalisation of media markets in all European countries.

Media professionals, journalists and the international and national experts who prepared the study "Pluralism of media ownership in the new media environment, had the opportunity to discuss and exhange views during the meeting on the current legal provisions on ownership concentration in the audiovisual sector, especially as this issue is gaining new relevance in the context of digital technologies, convergence, proliferation of new online media and fragmentation of the market and the audience.

As a follow-up activity to the study Pluralism of media ownership in the new media environment  produced to support the Agency for Audio and Audio-visual media services of North Macedonia, the discussion among else referred to the findings, conclusions and recommendations from the study. JUFREX action in North Macedonia is closely working with key actors in the field of freedom of expression and freedom of the media in advancing media pluralism and supporting the national media regulatory authority in aligning its practices with European standards. The produced study under the action was assessed by the participants to be an excellent basis for good debate with relevant stakeholders on regulating media pluralism.

This workshop was organised within the action on Freedom of expression and freedom of the media in North Macedonia (JUFREX 2)” . This action is a part of the joint European Union/Council of Europe programme “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey II”, that enables the Beneficiaries to meet their reform agendas in the fields of human rights, rule of law and democracy and to comply with European standards, including where relevant within the framework of the EU enlargement process.
