Kindergarten teachers prepared to recognise signs of child trafficking in North Macedonia

In 2021 and 2022, the Macedonian authorities have identified 13 child victims of human trafficking, subjected to sexual exploitation, forced marriage and begging. Being the victim of trafficking can have serious long-term effects on children and youth, causing them to drop out of school, experience long-term psychological trauma, and face serious health and safety issues.

With the aim to address child trafficking in North Macedonia, the  joint European Union and Council Europe action on “Preventing and Combating Human Trafficking in North Macedonia has been supporting the public authorities in building knowledge and capacities of education and other stakeholders to prevent child trafficking and to protect children at risk.

 

In this framework, twenty kindergarten teachers received training on basic concepts of trafficking in children, trafficking indicators, and channels of referral of child victims to assistance and support services. The participants, learnt how to detect warning signs and risk factors and provide rapid support to children in need.

 

The training was organised in the framework of The European Union / Council of Europe programme “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey II”, aims at assisting beneficiaries in South-East Europe to comply with the Council of Europe standards and European Union acquis in the framework of the enlargement process.
