Conference on how to combat corruption in higher education

A Conference on Ethics, Transparency and Integrity in Higher Education was held on 19 April 2018 in Pristina and brought together around 70 participants, including students and academic staff from both public and private universities, representatives of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, NGOs and international organisations.

The welcoming addresses were delivered by the Deputy Minister of Education, the Deputy Head of the Council of Europe Office in Pristina, the Head of the Political and Economic Section of the European Union Office in Kosovo* / EUSR and the Vice-Rector of the University of Pristina who highlighted the importance of this action.

The action has already contributed to the revision of the Law on Higher Education, and the inclusion of specific provisions on codes of conducts and ethical standards in higher education.

The conference was followed by presentations from prominent international speakers, experts in the field of academic integrity and a panel discussion. The President of the European Student Union (ESU) who participated in the panel discussion, encouraged the Kosovo students to be engaged and to join the ESU.

A very active debate followed with many issues concerning corruption, nepotism, plagiarism and other negative phenomena present in the Kosovo higher education system being highlighted by the participants.

The event was organised within the framework of the Action “Strengthen integrity and combat corruption in higher education” implemented under the joint European Union/Council of Europe programme ‘Horizontal Facility for Western Balkans and Turkey’.
