Publication “The phenomenon of child trafficking in Bosnia and Herzegovina” now available

Children represent half of the officially identified victims of human trafficking in Bosnia and Herzegovina, according to the official annual situation report. The country continues to be a country of origin, transit and destination for human trafficking, where 35 child victims, out of 70 victims in total, have been identified in 2020.

The new study, commissioned as a follow up to a recommendation by the Council of Europe Group of Experts on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings (GRETA), analyses current risks and trends in child trafficking in Bosnia and Herzegovina and assesses measures taken by authorities and professionals to fight against the phenomenon.

The study highlights a series of shortcomings and proposes actions aimed at improving the prevention of child trafficking, the identification of potential child victims and their protection, and the prosecution of cases of child trafficking.

In this context, the focus is placed on enhancing the coherence of policies and plans, and enhancing the co-ordination as well as the capacity of institutions, centres for social welfare and other professionals, so that the social and criminal responses to child trafficking in the country are more effective.

The study draws on qualitative interviews and desk research and provides statistical data from official sources. It was commissioned as part of the action on “Preventing and combating trafficking in human beings in Bosnia and Herzegovina”, implemented within the framework of the joint European Union and Council of Europe programme Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey (2019 – 2022).
