The European Union and the Council of Europe have been working hand in hand with the General Directorate of Prison Administration (GDPA) to raise the in-house capacities of the Training Center for Prison staff with the aim of creating a sustainable pool of professional trainers.

To this end, the first Training of Trainers (ToT) took place with 17 participants who are projected to serve as focal points in different prison facilities throughout the country. During the two-day training, held on 12 and 13 July in Durrës, participants were presented with the foundations of training techniques and skills for effective training, ranging from course structure, classroom management, presentation skills, introduction of interactive techniques for adult learning etc.

The ToT follows on the previous assistance provided to the GDPA in developing the Trainers Workbook offering a consolidated and uniformed training methodology to be used by all trainers of the training center. The latter offers initial and in job training to all prison staff, accounting for 4500 employees both as prison police and civil staff. Further trainings are planned to follow on specific content matter and further profiling of current and future trainers is sought.

This activity was organised within the scope of the action “Enhancing the protection of human rights of prisoners in Albania”, part of the Horizontal Facility II programme, a co-operation initiative of the European Union and the Council of Europe, which aims at assisting beneficiaries in the Western Balkans region and Turkey to comply with the Council of Europe standards and European Union acquis in the framework of the enlargement process, where relevant.
