On 4 April 2019, twenty lawyers enhanced their knowledge on how to represent victims of trafficking in human beings in Serbia and claim compensation for damages. The participants discussed good practice examples as well as challenges in this regard. They further analysed some recent cases of compensation for victims of human trafficking lodged with the Serbian national courts.

In addition, Radmila Dragicevic Dicic, the Judge of the Supreme Court of Cassation presented the international obligations and trends in the field of victims’ compensation for damages. She also discussed some existing challenges and possible solutions to those challenges and explained the approach of domestic judges to improve the victims’ access to compensation within the existing domestic legal framework. Lastly, an international expert from Bulgaria shared a good practice example of compensation claims as well as possible avenues of bringing a case before the European Court of Human Rights.

The training was organised in co-operation with the NGO Astra. It was held under the Action  “Preventing and combating trafficking in human beings in Serbia”, which is a part of the joint programme “Horizontal Facility for Western Balkans and Turkey”, co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe.
