LEADERSHIP TALENT CAMPS, MENTORING PROGRAM AND TEAM OF EXPERTS

Country: Germany

Organisation responsible: German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB)

Main topic addressed: leadership / coaching

Type of resource/practice: Educational tool

Discipline: Multi-sport

Target group(s): Women/female talents interested in leadership

Timing:

  • Leadership Talent Camps: two days
  • Mentoring Program: one year
  • Team of Experts: one year
(all three are ongoing; all data excluding preparation and review)

Language: German

Brief description of the practice:

Leadership Talent Camps: The camps are addressed to women who were either interested in a leadership position or who had filled a leadership position recently. Numerous workshops were held during the camp regarding developing competencies in communication and negotiation, public speaking, conflict management. A team of successful women from industry, science, politics and sport management assist and support the participants in further improving leadership skills and in building a supportive network.

Mentoring Program: The Mentoring program “As a mixed double to the top” was first established in 2012 and is currently in its fourth term (period 2018/19). It addresses young former female athletes (called Mentees), who are interested in leading positions within sports organisations. It aims at supporting these young women to achieve their goals and to provide them with practical skills and benefits for their professional, private and public life. The mentors involved in the program, both male and female, are successful and experienced leaders in sports organisations.

Team of Experts: The DOSB offers systematic guidance to its member associations through this process, including professional advice and support from a female team of experts from sports, politics and sciences. The aim of this initiative is to help associations to implement the task and at the same time use coaching activities to motivate women even further, and to give them the confidence to take the road to the top.

Content and objectives:

  • give professional advice to our member organisation,
  • provide expert knowledge,
  • accompany women leaders professionally,
  • build up a pool of dedicated women,
  • create awareness about opportunities of diversity.

Steps/activities of the practice:

The DOSB announces the activities to the target groups. Participation is free of charge. DOSB follows up the measure closely.

Resources required: Estimated budgetary requirements:

Camp: 10 to 20 participants, about 3,000 € per camp (2-days activity)
Mentoring program: about 20-25 participants, about 20,000–30,000 € (1-year activity)
Expert team: we run up to four consultations per year, about 4,000 € per consultation

Human resources: accompanying the measures by employee-DOSB; part-time job

Equipment: equipped seminar rooms

Achievements and outcomes:

In 2016 women’s general assembly of DOSB passed the DOSB-Strategy for Gender Equality 2016 until 2020. This strategy – addressed to DOSB – determines four thematic priorities (with regard to the proposal for Strategic Actions 2014–2020, recommended by the EU-Commission/Sport).

  • Gender equality in decisionmaking in Sport
  • Gender equality in coaching and refereeing
  • Fight against genderbased violence in and through sport
  • Fight against negative gender stereotypes in sport and the role of the media

All three measures are part of this strategy.

The project is increasing the sensibility of gender issues with the stakeholders/member organisations, it is providing advice for individual implementation within the member organisations, and it is building up a network of expertise.

Challenges and limitations:

First challenge is to be known by the potential participants. Due to our special structure of the German sport system – the DOSB is not in direct contact with the sports clubs, but there are several member organisations in between – we don´t reach people directly. Some practices are addressed to our direct member organisations, but they don’t reach the responsible persons.

The other challenge is to be visible for the stakeholders, decision-makers and political sector.

Follow-up ideas and future plans:

The team of experts will be expanding to other topics (coaching / preventing gender-based violence). Another idea is to integrate more strongly the mentoring program in the topic of coaching.
