INSTITUTIONAL TOOL TO PROMOTE EQUALITY AND DIVERSITY IN SPORT

Country: Belgium

Organisation responsible: Ministry of Wallonia-Brussels Federation (Sport administration and Directorate of equal opportunities) - Belgium

Main topic addressed: Gender equality in participation (grassroots or elite sport)

Type of resource/practice: Legislation, policies, standards and guidelines

Discipline: Multi-sport

Target group(s): All sports clubs, federations and organisations recognised by the Sport administration of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation

Timing: Since 2017

Language: French

Brief description of the practice: The purpose of these two calls for projects is to financially support the creation of pilot and innovative projects to promote women’s sport and sport practised by both sexes in the field of recreational and, particularly, team/collective sports. The aim of the first call was to support projects which allow men and women to have access to any sports’ activities they want and to practise them either in a unisex context or in a context in which women (girls) and men (boys) do sport together  (such as the creation of mixed teams in sports that are generally practised by one sex or the promotion of women’s participation as instructors or referees). The second call for projects aimed at promoting sport practised by families. The main objectives behind both calls was to deconstruct prejudices and stereotypes in sport and also to make sports traditionally practised by one sex more inclusive and open to the other sex. Both calls were open to sports federations, clubs, sports centres and municipal sports services for projects of 13 months maximum for people aged 12 and above. The projects had to include indicators to allow an evaluation of the progress. In 2017 and 2018, 24 and 36 projects were financed respectively.
