CODE OF GOOD GOVERNANCE IN FLEMISH SPORTS FEDERATIONS: COMPOSITION OF ITS BOARD

Country: Belgium

Organisation responsible: Sport Vlaanderen (Flemish Ministry of Sport)

Main topic addressed: Gender equality in leadership

Type of resource/practice: Legislation, policies, standards and guidelines

Discipline: Multi-sport

Target group(s): Sport Federations

Timing: 2016

Language: English

Brief description of the practice: In 2016 the Code of Good Governance in Flemish Sport Federations was published, containing 43 principles of good governance. Among these, some principles address the topic of gender balance. Particularly, principle 12 is about achieving a “differentiated, balanced and competent board”, in terms of gender, but also age and ethnicity. Principle 25 encourages organisations to implement actions aimed at “promoting equality and diversity within the sports discipline and within the organization” and finally principle 36 establishes an annual evaluation of composition and performance. Compliance with each principle is evaluated on a scale from 0 to 4 and organisations have a period of four years to achieve their objectives. Starting from 2017, federations implementing this Code are financially rewarded for their compliance.
