Council of Europe supports Legal Education in the framework of “Human Rights Protection Week”

On 8-11 December, 2016 in celebration of International Human Rights day, the Council of Europe in co-operation with German Foundation for International Legal Cooperation (IRZ) supported Moot Court competition (the competition) “Young lawyers for constitutional rights” organised by the NGO Georgian Yang lawyers Association  (GYLA). The competition is held for the tenth time at the Constitutional Court of Georgia for the students of law faculties.

The competition aimed at enhancing the knowledge of human rights among the students, increasing the awareness in the field of constitutional law; promoting the decisions of the Constitutional Court of Georgia and the European Court of Human Rights and supporting the implementation of ECHR standards of human rights protection in Georgian law practice.

After three days of intensive competing between 8 different groups of students, a jury composed by the Judge of the Constitutional Court of Georgia, National Human Rights Expert, Senior Project  Officer of the CoE Tbilisi Office and the representative of the Georgian Young Lawyers Association selected the wining group. .

As a result of the competition, the Constitutional Court named its three favorite participants, offering a great opportunity- six month paid internship at the Court.

Human Rights Day is observed every year on 10 December. It commemorates the day on which, in 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The Moot Court took place under the EU/CoE Joint Project "Application of the European Convention of Human Rights and harmonisation of national legislation and judicial practice in Georgia in line with European Standards", which is funded through the Programmatic Cooperation Framework for Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and Belarus.
