Women’s participation in politics and decision-making processes in the Eastern Partnership countries

An expert meeting on the Study on women’s participation in politics and decision-making processes in the six countries of the Eastern Partnership took place in Strasbourg on 27 November 2015 with the aim to define a structure of the future study taking into consideration the replies to the questionnaires by the national experts.

In particular it was decided that the study will focus on comparative data, whenever data is available and comparable, as well as on quantitative data.

The Study will focus on:
1) economic, social and cultural factor that hinder women political participation as well as on
2) political factors in particular how political system and internal structures in place affect greater participation of women in politics.

A general overview of the legal framework tracing EaP country’s international obligations as well as national legal and electoral systems will be presented in particular with a focus on the relationship between the system of elections and the numbers of women as candidates and becoming elected. The research will conclude with supportive practices mentioning concrete examples of successful arrangements in the EaP countries aimed at supporting women as well as practical conclusions and recommendations for further improvements.
