Trainings on consumer rights and cultural stereotypes in media reporting

Within EU funded projects on “Promoting freedom, professionalism and pluralism of the media’” and “Protecting internet freedom through legislation and arrangements for Multi-stakeholder dialogue” the Council of Europe (CoE) organises a series of training for students and journalists on Consumer Rights and Cultural Stereotypes in Media Reporting.

During the trainings the CoE experts will review the ethical and legal framework for ensuring the protections of online user’s rights including their possible limitations and the available legal remedies. The participants will become familiar with the landmark decision delivered by the ECtHR with regard to the intermediary liability and to the right to access to the internet. Furthermore, as part of promoting the ethical standards the media professionals will be able to increase their knowledge about the ways how to avoid or even encounter the cultural stereotypes in media reporting.

The trainings will take place  from 20 to 23 April 2017 in Hotel “Lopota”, Kakheti Region, Georgia.

The events are organised within the framework of the joint CoE/EU Programs “EU/CoE Joint Project Promoting freedom, professionalism and pluralism of the media” and “Protecting Internet Freedom through Legislation and Arrangements for Multi-stakeholder Dialogue”. The projects were launched in January 2015 and aim to improve freedom, independence, pluralism and diversity of media, to review media legislation and regulation to bring these in line with European standards, including ethical standards for media professionalism as well as to increase the compliance of national legal frameworks and policies with CoE standards on freedom of expression and the knowledge of relevant state authorities about Council of Europe Internet governance and human rights standards and related European Court of Human Rights case-law.
