Training on standards of the European Convention on Human Rights for Jury Trials

Pursuant to increased jurisdiction of jury trials in Georgia from 1 January, 2017 Council of Europe, within the EU funded project, conducts series of trainings on Jury Trial Standards under ECHR and more than 60 judges already went through the trainings delivered by national and international experts. The aim of the trainings is to increase the awareness of newly assigned judges on jury trials on ECHR standards and thus enable them to carry out jury trials in line with ECHR requirements.

On 2 and 4 March were organised two more one-day training sessions on “Jury Trial Standards under ECHR”. Participants had an opportunity to discuss such topics as Selection of jurors and impartiality issues; Media and jury trials; Presumption of innocence Examination of Witnesses; Reasoning requirements in jury trials; etc.

The activity was organised within the framework of the European Union – Council of Europe joint project “Application of the European Convention on Human Rights and harmonisation of national legislation and judicial practice in line with European standards in Georgia”, implemented under the EU-CoE Programmatic Cooperation Framework.
