The Council of Europe welcomes the adoption of a special form documenting ill-treatment in prisons

On 26 October 2016, the Ministry of Corrections and Probation of Georgia adopted a special form and procedure for documenting injuries of alleged ill-treatment in prisons. Adoption of the form and its use is of significant importance as proper and timely documentation will contribute to investigating allegations of ill-treatment and fight against impunity in prisons.

The form for documenting the injuries was developed with the help of the European Union and Council of Europe  Joint Programme "Human Rights in Prisons and Other Closed Institutions". During the second phase of the project which is part of CoE/EU Eastern Partnership Programmatic Cooperation Framework, the implementation of the decree will be supported by developing the training curriculum including the educational film and preparing the medical personnel.  Within the assistance of the same project, a similar form was drafted for the Temporary Detention Isolators of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia as well.

This activity is a part of the European Union and the Council of Europe joint action that aims at improving the provision of mental health in Georgian prisons and other closed institutions.
