The Council of Europe continues promoting educational aspects of civic integration of national minorities in Georgia

A number of public schools in Georgia provide education in minority languages, however, there is lack of textbooks and the quality of the existing ones necessitates improvement. To address this issue, among other things, existing Greek language textbooks (5 Volumes) have been updated and reprinted in cooperation  with the Institute of Classical Philology, Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies, Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University. The project also supported reprint of the Modern Greek - Georgian Dictionary.

On 19 March 2017, the updated Greek textbooks and the Greek - Georgian dictionary were handed over to the Director, Ms Tamar Tapanadze and pupils of the First Classical Gymnasium, Tbilisi. Representative of the Ministry of Education and the Adviser to the President of Georgia on National Minorities - Ms Sophio Shamanidi, attending the meeting, voiced their support to this initiative and expressed readiness to cooperate in future. It needs to be mentioned, that the program “Greek language in Georgian Schools” started in 1997 initiated by the Greek Embassy and Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University and currently 15 schools provide Greek language lessons. All those schools will be provided with the updated textbooks by the end of April 2017.

The event took place in the framework of the EU/Council of Europe Joint Programme “Civic Integration of National Minorities in Georgia and the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages”.
