Support to the Moldovan Bar Association: Admission to the Bar and lawyers’ continuous training: best practices from European Bars and Law Societies

On 18 November the "Support to the Moldovan Bar Association" component of the PCF Project on Strengthening the efficiency of justice and support to lawyers’ profession in the Republic of Moldova, organised in Chisinau a first of its kind international Conference to bring to the Moldovan Bar Association best practices on a fair and transparent admission to the Bar and the institutionalisation of lawyers’ continuous training. The members of the Board, Commissions and regional bars of the Moldovan Bar Association, as well as representatives of the Women Lawyers Association and Young Lawyers Association benefited from practices presented by their counterparts from Poland, England and Wales, Georgia, Ireland, France and Finland.

The Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe, represented by its President in 2015, Mrs Maria Slazak, and its Senior Legal Advisor, Ms Sieglinde Gamsjäger, enriched the lively discussions with the organisation’s work and plans for future on the admission to the profession and lawyers training. The conference took place at the National Institute of Justice, supporting thus the implementation of the cooperation memorandum the Moldovan Bar Association signed in 2016 with the latter.

At the end of the Conference, Mrs. Nina Lozan, the president of the Moldovan Bar Association, concluded with their openness to finalise, approve and implement the necessary regulations on the organisation of the continuous training of lawyers and to re-launch the internal decision-making on the admission practices, in line with best European practices and Council of Europe recommendations.

The component on the "Support to the Moldovan Bar Association" of the "Strengthening the efficiency of justice and support to lawyers' profession in the Republic of Moldova" project is funded by the Programmatic Cooperation Framework for Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and Belarus. The Council of Europe and European Union are working in partnership with Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and Belarus to help them meet Council of Europe benchmarks in human rights, democracy and the rule of law and improve the lives of citizens.
