Successful completion of HELP online anti-discrimination course for Georgian prosecutors

On November 10, 2016 Council of Europe and Chief Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia held a certificate award ceremony for the prosecutors who have successfully completed the HELP (Human Rights Education for Legal Professionals) Distance Learning Course on Anti-Discrimination issues.

The course, which has started in April and lasted till the end of September, had 20 participants, all of which have passed the final test and have received certificates. The online course was led by the national tutor, Ms Salome Shengelia, who has been trained on how to handle HELP course in Strasbourg. The course has been developed by the Council of Europe consultants and it was adapted to the Georgian contexts. Thus, the course contains indications to the Georgian cases which make it even more interesting for Georgian prosecutors.

As a result of the activity, 20 prosecutors are now capable to discuss anti-discrimination topics in-depth, easily depict hidden discrimination motives in the case files they work on, and are able to well substantiate  indictments when sending them to the Court in discrimination cases.

The award ceremony was opened by the Chief Prosecutor of Georgia, Mr Irakli Shotadze, Georgian Deputy Prosecutor Mr. Giorgi Gogadze and the Head of the Council of Europe Office in Georgia, Mr Cristian Urse.

The HELP course took place under the EU/CoE Joint Project "Application of the European Convention on Human Rights and harmonisation of national legislation and judicial practice in Georgia in line with European Standards", which is funded through the Programmatic Cooperation Framework for Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and Belarus.
