Meeting in Asureti

On 2 March 2017, the deputy head of the Council of Europe Office in Georgia, Mrs Ana Zec met with the head of Tetritskaro Municipality, Besik Tsiklauri in Tetritskaro, Kvemo Kartli Region.

The aim of the meeting was to hand over the 80 bilingual street signs produced by the Council of Europe to be placed/used for the recently renamed street in Asureti – Schwabenstraße (named in honor of the founders of Elisabethtal (currently Asureti) - Swabians from the Swabia region in south-western Germany) and to discuss the future cooperation initiatives. The parties thanked each other for the fruitful cooperation and expressed a willingness for further collaboration.

It needs to be mentioned, that the touristic trilingual (Georgian-German-English) wall-mounted and separately standing signs as well as the directional road signs were placed in Asureti, the historic German settlement located in Tetritskaro Municipality, on the cultural heritage objects belonging to German minority in the framework of the project as well. These activities are dedicated mainly to raising awareness of the local German cultural heritage that could have the positive effects for the development of local tourism as well.

The meeting took place in the framework of the EU/Council of Europe Joint Programme “Civic Integration of National Minorities in Georgia and the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages”.
