Is the Moldovan law on ensuring equality in line with European standards?

An assessment of the Law on Ensuring Equality in the Republic of Moldova was presented today at a roundtable in Chisinau.

The roundtable provided an open forum for discussing the normative anti-discrimination framework of the Republic of Moldova. The assessment of the law provides recommendations to ensure the increased efficiency of the Council for Prevention and Elimination of Discrimination and Ensuring Equality, such as: the power to impose sanctions, the power to file requests before the Constitutional Court for constitutional review of legislative provisions, the power to provide opinions or advisory opinions to the courts, etc.

Representatives of the Council of Europe, European Union Delegation to the Republic of Moldova, Supreme Court of Justice, Council for Prevention and Elimination of Discrimination and Ensuring the Equality of Moldova, Ombudsperson Office, National Institute of Justice, Governmental Agent, PCF National Coordinator and leading non-governmental and International organisations working in the area of human rights attended the event.

The assessment was prepared in the framework of the joint EU/CoE Project “Supporting national efforts for prevention and combating discrimination in Moldova” and was conducted by Council of Europe consultants – Ms Ivana Roagna and Prof Dr Nevena Petrusic.

This Project is funded by European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe.
