Georgian Court staff on a study visit to the Cassation Court of France

The direct application of the European Convention on Human Rights by Paris Cassation Court Judges was the main topic of discussion in Paris during a study visit of the delegation of analytical staff of Georgian Courts and Prosecutor’s Office on 12 and 13 May 2016.

The Georgian delegation of seven court representatives and three prosecutors, met with the criminal and civil chamber judges of the Paris Cassation Court and with its Department of documentation and research, and learnt how the European Convention on Human Rights is implemented in France and what kind of influence the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights has on the national jurisprudence. Members of the Delegation were introduced to recent legislative changes in France generated from the Court's judgments. They became familiar with those Cassation Court judgments in which European Court of Human Rights doctrines and standards were directly applied.

The Georgian delegation were impressed with the analytical technics used at the Department of documentation and research of the Paris Cassation Court and they plan to implement the same research standard at Georgian Courts.

This study visit was organised in the framework of the European Union – Council of Europe joint project “Application of the European Convention on Human Rights and harmonisation of national legislation and judicial practice in Georgia in line with European standards”, being implemented under the EU-CoE Programmatic Cooperation Framework.
