First training programme in Georgia for psychiatric nurses

The Council of Europe Office in Georgia and European Union Delegation are assisting the Georgian government in developing the first of its kind of programme in Georgia for psychiatric nurses. A team of international and national experts has developed a first draft of the programme which was discussed with the representatives of the Ministry of Corrections, Ministry of Labour, Health and Social Affairs , Georgian Nurses Association and practitioner doctors and nurses on 9-10 February.

Mental health nurses play a central role as clinicians, case managers, clinical nurse specialists, and nurse practitioners in mental health-care settings in various countries. The development of this programme in Georgia is aligning national practice to European standards, which stem from recognising the role that nurses could play as part of multidisciplinary teams that deal with mental illnesses.

The programme is designed for professional development of the psychiatric nurses. 12-week training program is aimed at teaching the basic theoretical knowledge on mental health issues.  Selected nurses will have a possibility to undergo the training of trainers when the programme is finalised.

This activity has been organised within the framework of the CoE/EU Eastern Partnership Programmatic Cooperation Framework Project “Human Rights and Healthcare in prisons and Other Closed Institutions in Georgia II”.

We work together to promote Human rights, Democracy and Rule of Law!
