Ensuring equality and non-discrimination in the Republic of Moldova

The National Communication Strategy for Prevention of Discrimination and Ensuring Equality was presented to the public at an event on 16 June in Chisinau, Republic of Moldova. At the event there were also discussions about the creation of the Consultative Council to the Council of the Prevention and Elimination of Discrimination and Ensuring Equality.

Ms Eva GUTJAR, Deputy-Head of the Council of Europe Office in Chisinau, Mr Vladimir TURCAN, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights and Inter-ethnic Relations, Mr Mindaugas KACERAUSKIS, Political Counsellor, European Union Delegation to the Republic of Moldova and Mr Ian FELDMAN, President of the Council for Prevention and Elimination of Discrimination and Ensuring Equality addressed and welcomed the participants during the opening.

The Consultative Council represents an open and inclusive multi-stakeholder platform which includes civil society, trade unions, academia and members of central and local public administration. This body will function on a voluntary basis, with its main role to advocate, consult and assist the Equality Council in monitoring the implementation of the relevant legislation.  Best European practices and possible modalities of work of such bodies were presented during the event, and opened discussions on the best possible solutions for the Moldovan context.

Another important tailor-made policy for the Republic of Moldova is the National Communication Strategy for Prevention of Discrimination and Ensuring Equality. The Strategy is addressed to the community of organisations, donors, state institutions, activists and other stakeholders involved in Prevention of Discrimination and Ensuring Equality.

The event was organised within the joint European Union-Council of Europe project “Supporting national efforts for prevention and combating discrimination in Moldova,” which is part of the Programmatic Cooperation Framework for Eastern Partnership countries.
