Rights and fundamental freedoms of Internet users in Moldova

On Thursday 28 April, the Joint Project of the Council of Europe and European Union “Strengthening the respect for human rights in the implementation of the Republic of Moldova’s Digital Agenda” will organise an international conference on “The Internet User’s Rights and Fundamental Freedoms Day”.

The conference aims to promote the idea of an Internet multi-stakeholder platform in the Republic of Moldova in order to underline both the Council of Europe and Moldova’s vision of a people-centered approach to the Internet policies.

The conference speakers and participants will share and discuss the Council of Europe and European best practices and expertise on Human Rights and Internet and models of multi-stakeholder platforms. The discussions will also focus on further harmonization of the Internet legal framework of the Republic of Moldova with the Council of Europe standards with regard to remedies for human rights violations and other interferences with freedom of expression and right to private life.

Vasile Botnari, Minister of Information Technology and Communications of the Republic of Moldova; Jose-Luis Herrero, Head of the Council of Europe Office in Chisinau; H.E. Pirkka Tapiola, Head of the European Union Delegation to the Republic of Moldova; H.E. Dirk Van Eeckhout, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Belgium to the Council of Europe; Michael Yakushev, ICANN Vice-President for Eastern Europe will deliver welcoming remarks.

A Joint Statement will be adopted by participants at the conference, highlighting the main objectives in respect to the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms on the Internet in the Republic of Moldova, the implementation of which would ensure a dedicated multi-stakeholder dialogue.

The event is carried out in the framework of Moldova ICT Summit 2016 in partnership with the Ministry of Information Technology and Communications of the Republic of Moldova, ICANN, OGI and Moldovan Association of ICT Companies.

The opening of the conference will take place at 09:00 local time on Thursday, 28 April 2016, at the Radisson Blu Leogrand Hotel (Raut Conference Hall), str. Mitropolit Varlaam, 77 (Vlaicu Pârcălab entrance). English-Romanian interpretation will be provided.
