Public stakeholder meeting on Non-Discrimination and Equality

Stakeholders’ Meeting on supporting the setting-up of the Consultative Council to the Equality Council and Public Presentation of the National Communication Strategy for Prevention of Discrimination and Ensuring Equality took place on 16 of June in Chisinau.

75 participants representing more than 14 human rights NGOs, central and local public administration of the countries districts also academia and private sector attended the event.

Mr Ian FELDMAN, President of the Council for Prevention and Elimination of Discrimination and Ensuring Equality, mentioned the importance of institutionalizing co-operation between civil society and the Equality Council as a mechanism for the good and transparent functioning of the Council. Ms Eva GUTJAR, Deputy-Head of the Council of Europe Office in Chisinau, underlined that “Equality between women and men is one of the CoE fundamental values representing a driver for democracy and rule of law first of all but also for economic growth”. The Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights and Inter-ethnic Relations, Mr Vladimir TURCAN, stated that “the setting up of a Consultative Council is a very good idea because the issue of human rights especially that of non-discrimination and equality aren’t not solved yet in the way the citizens of the Republic of Moldova expects". Mr Mindaugas KACERAUSKIS, Political Counsellor, European Union Delegation to the Republic of Moldova, wanted to bring up the importance of the National Communication Strategy, as there are a lot of prejudices and misunderstandings regarding equality and discrimination in the society, especially in regions.

The event aimed at the promoting the creation of the Consultative Council with the main role to assist the Council in monitoring the implementation of the relevant legislation and to publicly present the National Communication Strategy for Prevention of Discrimination and Ensuring Equality, addressed to the community of organisations, donors, state institutions, activists and other stakeholders involved in Prevention of Discrimination and Ensuring Equality.

The event was organised within the joint European Union- Council of Europe project “Supporting national efforts for prevention and combating discrimination in Moldova” , which is part of the Programmatic Co-operation Framework for Eastern Partnership countries.
