Series of Seminars on Human Rights and Democracy in Primary Schools Launched in Azerbaijan

The Council of Europe, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan, has launched a series of training seminars on human rights education and education for democratic citizenship for trainers and teachers. The first series of seminars is held within the framework of the EU/CoE Joint Programme "Promoting Human Rights Education and Democratic Citizenship in Eastern Partnership Countries".

The launching seminar for primary school teachers "Human Rights and Democracy at Primary School" was held on 27-30 January in Baku, Republic of Azerbaijan. 35 primary school teachers and educators from Educators' Professional Development Institute in Baku (Azerbaijan) attended the four-day training workshop and got acquainted with educational materials of the Council of Europe on Education for Democratic Citizenship and Human Rights Education (EDC/HRE).

The aim of this and future seminars is to introduce the basic principles and tools of EDC/HRE into the classroom and to develop training materials that would help teachers create a democratic environment in their schools and classrooms. Teachers and students will also be introduced to human rights and children rights and will thus be more motivated to participate in their schools’ life.

In his opening remarks, the Deputy Head of Council of Europe Office in Baku Joël Mermet noted: "Education for democratic citizenship and human rights education (EDC/HRE) is one of the priority areas of the Council of Europe education programme. It focuses primarily on the emerging generation, enabling children and young people to become engaged and responsible European citizens who advocate human rights and participate fully in democratic life. We hope that these seminars will help you build on the skills and knowledge that you already possess as well as provide you with new tools to advance democratic reforms in the education system of Azerbaijan".

Participants will also get acquainted with the CoE manual "Compassito" developed for primary education. The manual is planned to be used in classroom activities throughout Azerbaijan.
