Training for the medical staff of nine prison healthcare units on the use of the medical equipment provided the project

The capacity of medical staff to deliver medical services for detained persons in nine prisons of Armenia was strengthened with the organisation of nine one-day training sessions on the use of medical equipment purchased earlier in the year with the financial support of the project.

In total, forty-three medical staff (fifteen female) attended the training sessions that were conducted by two local consultants covering both technical and medical aspects of the provided equipment. The installation, as well as the effective use and maintenance of medical equipment were presented in detail and particular attention was given to practical sessions on the use of electronic medical equipment (autoclave, dry sterilizer, glucometer).

Additionally, the training sessions were also occasions for the medical staff to refresh their knowledge on specific conditions and diseases, such as tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, drug addiction, psychoses, methods of diagnosis and treatment in accordance with accepted protocols. A training session on prevention activities on prison-specific diseases was also provided. Open and frank discussions among prarticipants also reveal practical issues concerning the effective use of available spaces for medical examination and resulted in recommendations on the improvement of conditions of examination and dental rooms.

The training was organised within the Project on “Strengthening healthcare and human rights protection in prisons in Armenia”, funded under EU/CoE Partnership for Good Governance framework.
