Training on European standards in anti-discrimination in Georgia

On 23-26 February 2016 the Council of Europe organised a four day training of trainers activity for Georgian prosecutors on European anti-discrimination standards, in collaboration with the Chief Prosecutor’s Office. The activity was a follow-up of an initial session that was organised in November 2015 for the same group of prosecutors.

The aim of the training of trainers was to prepare the pool of experts for the Chief Prosecutor’s Office on anti-discrimination issues, in order to be capable of conducting seminars on this subject to their fellow prosecutors.

The training was delivered by Ms Ivana Roagna, an international expert on discrimination issues; Mr Levan Meskhoradze, the State Agent to the ECtHR; and Mr Maciej Florkiewicz, the Prosecutor at the appellate prosecutor’s office in Lublin, Poland.

The training included a combination of experts’ and participants’ presentations, aimed at providing trainees with some basic knowledge on the principles of interpretation of the ECHR through peer to peer teaching. It was also an opportunity to discuss about adult learning techniques and methodologies. At the end of the training a final test was administered.

The participants received final participation certificates signed by the Head of Office of the Council of Europe in Georgia, Mr Cristian Urse and the Chief Prosecutor of Georgia, Mr Irakli Shotadze.

The training took place under the EU/CoE Joint Project "Application of the European Convention of Human Rights and harmonisation of national legislation and judicial practice in Georgia in line with European Standards", which is funded through CoE-EU Programmatic Cooperation Framework for Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and Belarus.
