Judicial training on jury trial standards in Georgia

On 25-26 and 27-28 April, the Council of Europe organised 2 two-day training sessions on the jury trial standards for judges and assistant judges in Georgia in collaboration with the High School of Justice. The training sessions aimed to improve judges’ and their assistants’ knowledge on jury trial standards and on the recent practice of the European Court of Human Rights regarding jury trials.

The training was delivered by national experts – Ms. Nino Khaindrava, a lawyer from the European Court of Human Rights and Mr. Zaza Meishvili, a former Supreme Court Judge. Besides European practices, trainers widely discussed the national legislation and practice on jury trial and reviewed the planned changes to the Criminal Procedure Code amending the articles related to trial by jury. During the training, the participants reviewed several cases, specially written for them by the experts.

The training took place under the EU/CoE Joint Project "Application of the European Convention of Human Rights and harmonisation of national legislation and judicial practice in Georgia in line with European Standards", which is funded through CoE-EU Programmatic Cooperation Framework for Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and Belarus.
