Improving ethics in journalism in Georgia

The Council of Europe, in cooperation with the Georgian Charter of Journalistic Ethics, organised a two-day workshop for the Georgian journalists on Ethical Standards of  New Media. The workshop took place in Tbilisi on 29 February and 1 March 2016 and was attended by the members of the Georgian Charter of Journalistic Ethics along with the local media professionals and the representatives of the Georgian National Communications Commission.

During the workshop the international experts of the Council of Europe held the presentations about the CoE and ECHR standards related to the liability of intermediary medias and the latest decisions and tendencies in the European self-regulatory sector. The experts reviewed several particular cases and discussed the relevant aspects and conclusions of the decisions. Furthermore, the local Council of Europe experts presented the basic findings and suggested recommendations of the latest Council of Europe Mapping Report on Ethical Standards of the Georgian media and discussed the specific cases ruled by the Georgian self-regulatory bodies. In addition, the participants considered various measures for intensifying their cooperation for increasing the public awareness about the self-regulatory institutes in the country and the possibility to expand the current definition of the term “Concerned Party” specified in the “Code of Conducts for Broadcasters” in order to allow all interested persons to file the complaint against relevant media products.

The workshop has been covered by the leading Georgian media outlets including the Radio Free Liberty; the national television stations such Georgian Public Service Broadcaster, Imedi TV and accent.com.ge, online news media.
