The Alpine Region represents the largest preserved natural area of mountain range in Europe with unique geographical and natural features.

Seven countries (Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein,Switzerland and and Slovenia) are part of the EU Strategy for the Alpine Region, working together around the following objectives:

  • 1. Fair access to job opportunities, building on the high competiveness of the Region;
  • 2. Sustainable internal and external accessibility;
  • 3. A more inclusive environmental framework and renewable and reliable energy solutionsfor the future;
  • 4. A sound macro-regional governance model for the Region to improve cooperation and thecoordination of action.

Currently, more than 23 Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe cross the area, such as the Via Francigena, the Huguenots and Waldensian Trail and the European Route of Historical Thermal Towns. Through the feasibility study, prepared in the view of the Routes4U meeting for the Alpine Region (2-3 April 2019, Bard, Italy), learn how the Cultural Routes can contribute to protect and promote the culture of the Alpine Region.
