First meeting of the coordinators of the project on Combating Hate Speech in Sport

The first meeting of the national coordinators participating in the joint EU-CoE project “Combating Hate Speech in Sport” took take place in the morning of 31 May 2022 .

 

The national coordinators have been nominated by the Ministries responsible for Sport of the partner countries of the joint project, i.e. France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Montenegro and Spain, to explore innovative ways to address this worrying phenomenon. During the meeting, each national coordinator described the main challenges to addressing hate speech in sport, as well as the rationale for joining the project.

 

This meeting was an opportunity to frame what is meant by hate speech, present the project and agree on the next steps .

 

Sophie Kwasny, Head of the Sport Division of the Council of Europe, opened the meeting and notably referenced the Revised European Sports Charter and the Saint Denis Convention as key elements of the framework for this joint project. The project “Combating Hate Speech in Sport” is co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe, and it is set to take place until the end of 2023.
