Baltic Forum on Education for Democratic Citizenship (EDC) and Human Rights Education (HRE) held in Tallinn

How can co-operation on promoting Education for Democratic Citizenship (EDC) and Human Rights Education (HRE) be strengthened in the Baltic countries? This was one of the topics discussed during a forum that took place in Tallinn on 17 October.

The aim of the Baltic Forum was to share good practices and showcase the results of the Project “Baltic Partnership for Human Rights Education and Education for Democratic Citizenship”, a project supported by the EU/CoE Joint Programme “Human Rights and Democracy in Action”.

Representatives of Ministries of Education of the three participating countries namely, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, representatives of non-governmental organisations and teachers participated in this forum.

Two presentations by international experts were given: “How to teach controversial issues through Education for Democratic Citizenship and Human Rights Education” by David Kerr, Consultant Director of Education, Citizenship Foundation UK and “Digital Era: Importance of assessing information from media and social networks” by Vitor Tomé, Teacher trainer and Researcher at the Science and Technology Portuguese Foundation.

The Project “Baltic Partnership for Human Rights Education and Education for Democratic Citizenship” aims to strengthen the co-operation between Baltic States in the field of EDC/HRE. In the context of the project, the publications “Teaching Controversial Issues” and “How to develop the ability of students to assess information from media and social networks?” were translated and adapted into four languages (Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian and Russian).
