Zpět Online mentoring session with Roma Women in Bulgaria

In the framework of JUSTROM3 programme, mentoring sessions with Roma Women are foreseen, aiming for their empowerment so that they become themselves agents of change in their communities. JUSTROM3 consultants, despite the current critical context, continue the implementation of the programme’s activities at the local level and are of support to Roma communities.

On 24 April 2020, an online meeting was held with women meant to become Roma Women Community Leaders and to contribute to the empowerment of additional Roma Women in their communities. The meeting was organised by JUSTROM3 consultants in Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria: Mr Valeri Angelov, Ms Eleonora Dimotrova, Mr Ventsislav Foti, Ms Teodora Krumova and Ms Dilyana Giteva.

The women participating in the meeting decided that brochures on different topics with the frequently asked questions will be the most relevant for them to start with. They decided to prepare questions in advance, so that the national coordinator and legal consultants could draft the answers with translation into Romani and Turkish.

In April, two other online mentoring sessions with Roma women were held in Plovdiv led by JUSTROM3 legal consultants, Ms Rada Elenkova and Ms Milena Kadieva. At the request of Roma women present at the meeting, the topic of discussion was domestic violence, a particularly important topic to discuss because there are many prejudices related to women’s role in the family that impose their subordination. Types of violence, means of support, negative effects of the violence, domestic violence and stereotypes, patriarchal culture were all discussed and the materials supporting the meeting were designed in a user-friendly manner and involved essential steps for survivors’ support and access to services/justice.

In May two other mentoring sessions for Roma Women will take place in Plovdiv focusing on Human Trafficking.
