The iconic lyrics of Ederlezi, a beloved folk song of the Romani people in the Balkans, echoed through Belgrade's Dorćol Platz as over 150 women, men, boys, and girls gathered to sing it a cappella in a one-of-a-kind event.
Organised by Art Aparat with the support of the Council of Europe on the occasion of Human Rights Day, this uplifting event harnessed the power of music to promote intercultural exchange and champion diversity and Roma inclusion.
The highlight of the event was a special appearance by Zejna Murkić, a prominent Roma singer known for her powerful voice and advocacy for human rights. Through her personal and artistic journey, Zejna inspired the audience and became a positive role model for youth, reinforcing the message that Roma voices deserve to be heard.
She emphasised that music is a universal language that connects us beyond our differences. Her words resonated deeply, particularly during the interactive music workshop that followed.
In a "live rehearsal" session, attendees were invited to join the Svi UGLAS choir, underscoring the belief that inclusion requires active participation, not just observation. Children, parents, and community members came together in song, creating an unforgettable experience that left many feeling inspired.
This event was part of the action “Combating discrimination and promoting diversity in Serbia,” implemented within the joint European Union/Council of Europe programme “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Türkiye”.
