Children are surrounded by the media from their birth – media and communication platforms and content are part of their environment, their family life, their fun and play time, their learning habits and social skills development. Children are active users of the media; they react to them and create their own cognitions. In modern childhood it is difficult to define a boundary between the virtual and the real world, mostly because those two worlds are completely intertwined.

Making children media literate means having future society of aware and responsible individuals. Within the joint EU and Council of Europe action on “Freedom of expression and freedom of the media in Serbia (JUFREX)” we have translated into Serbian and printed four publications on media literacy for preschool children: Picture book about the media; How parents can support their children in the world of media?; Workshop: Advertisements; Workshop: Optical toys.

The aim of these publications for the youngest is to educate and inform children, parents, teachers and educators on the media, media environment and highlight the importance of media literacy - one of the most important life skills of the 21st century. Through a creative approach, these educational materials bring children closer to the world of media and enable them to better understand the world around them.

Publications in Serbian were prepared in co-operation with the Serbian Regulatory authority for electronic Media, based on the support of the Agency of Electronic Media, Croatia and UNICEF Office in Croatia.

JUFREX activities on media literacy are a follow up to the publications prepared under the previous phase of this action (2016-2019): Media regulatory authorities and protection of minors and Study on Regulatory Authorities for Electronic Media and Media Literacy – Comparative Analysis of the Best European Practices.

JUFREX is part of the “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey II”, joint initiative of the European Union and the Council of Europe, which aims at assisting Beneficiaries in the Western Balkans region and Turkey to comply with the Council of Europe standards and European Union acquis in the framework of the enlargement process, where relevant.
