Combating stereotypes and hatred against the LGBTI community in the north of Montenegro

During October, the action on “Promotion of diversity and equality in Montenegro”, in co-operation with the Ministry of Interior of Montenegro and local civil society organisations, is organising trainings for police officers on the topic "Fight against hate crimes and the rights of LGBTI people".

The trainings are focused on acquainting police officers with all the specifics of endangering the rights of LGBTI people, the characteristic situations in which these rights are violated, and the basic principles of the police in dealing with victims of homophobic violence and discrimination.

The participants are trained also by local police officers, who underwent themselves a learning program in the past months, based on the Council of Europe relevant manual, as well as the local one prepared by NGO Juventas and updated with support of the action.

The first cascade training, intended for police officers from the north-western region of Montenegro, was held on 18-19 October in Berane. The second cascade training, intended for police officers from the north-eastern region of Montenegro, will be held on 25-26 October also in Berane.

The cascade trainings for local police officers are an initiative of the action “Promotion of diversity and equality in Montenegro”, part of the joint European Union/Council of Europe programme “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey 2019-2022”.
