The media have a particular role in the process of democratic, cultural, social, and economic development for every society, which is why the adoption, and the appropriate implementation of media public policy bears crucial relevance. The latest “Assessment: Economic vitality and sustainability of the audio-visual media industry in the digital environment in North Macedonia” published within the joint European Union and Council of Europe action “Protecting freedom of expression and of the media in North Macedonia” (PRO-FREX), addresses the viability and sustainability of the audiovisual media sector and considers the related challenges from the global perspective, with focus on the Republic of North Macedonia.
According to this assessment, the potential of the audiovisual industries is still not recognised by various state institutions and already existing general measures to encourage entrepreneurship are not implemented at all in the audiovisual media sector. The assessment identifies key measures in support of enhancing the production of domestic audiovisual content, such as: fiscal measures, professional and institutional networking, direct funding, support to education, training, and professional development, etc.
This assessment was prepared under the joint programme of the European Union and the Council of Europe, Horizontal Facility – Phase II, and was translated in Macedonian language under the third phase of the programme.
