The conference co-organised with the Constitutional Court of Armenia on 8-9 June in Yerevan, served as a platform to facilitate the dialogue between the Constitutional Court, courts of general jurisdiction and other branches of power, alongside with the international community and civil society. The aim was to discuss ways through which the independence of the judiciary could be strengthened, and public trust increased. Ongoing reforms in Armenia were discussed.
The President of the Constitutional Court Mr Arman Dilanyan; Ambassador, Head of the European Union Delegation to Armenia H.E. Andrea Wiktorin, Head of the Council of Europe Office in Yerevan Ms Martina Schmidt and Head of Department for the Implementation of Human Rights, Justice and Legal Co-operation Standards of the Council of Europe DGI Mr Frédéric Dolt, presented opening remarks.
Keynote address by the President of the European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission) Ms Claire Bazy-Malaurie focused on the Role of the Judiciary in Preserving Democracy and Democratic Values in the Society.
“Democratic values as enshrined in the Constitution form the guiding principles of the democratic system in Armenia. Principles that do not only serve as parameter for executive or the legislative but for every single actor in the justice system” - highlighted the Head of the Council of Europe Office in Yerevan, Ms Martina Schmidt.
This conference was organised in the framework of the project “Support to judicial reform - enhancing the independence and professionalism of the judiciary in Armenia,” funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe in their Partnership for Good Governance II 2019-2022.
