Supporting the role of the youth field and the inclusion of young refugees

Starting in 2016, the Partnership between the European Commission and the Council of Europe has developed initiatives related to the role of youth work for the inclusion of young refugees. In the expert seminar “Journeys to a new life” in November 2016 a set of key messages and proposals were developed.
In 2017, the EU-CoE youth partnership continues its work to develop knowledge and enhance the exchange of practices on the role of the youth sector in supporting young refugees.

Workshops on the role of youth work in the inclusion and participation of young refugees

The main aim of the workshops is to create a space for learning about approaches that youth work uses for supporting the inclusion and participation for young refugees.

The workshops will be organised in Strasbourg, France, 2 – 4 October 2017, and Thessaloniki, Greece, 4 - 6 December 2017.

The main aim of the workshops is to create a space for learning about approaches that youth work and youth policy use for supporting the inclusion and participation of young refugees.

During each workshop, the group of participants:

  • Identify challenges related to youth work with young refugees and ways to address these challenges, particularly on the following themes: intercultural dialogue and learning, access to social rights, involving young women, participation in local life, autonomy
  • Analyse a local practice of youth work and/or youth policies supporting the inclusion and participation of young refugees
  • Have the space to exchange views with young refugees and with other youth sector’s practitioners and network
  • Identify support measures needed for youth work with young refugees.

The workshop will enhance the creation of knowledge about practical approaches youth work can adopt in supporting the inclusion and participation of young refugees. A collection of good practices will complement the workshop outcomes, which will be collected in a publication that will serve practitioners in the youth field.

Knowledge

A knowledge book is currently under preparation.

Another foreseen activity is a learning workshop, based on local practices by the youth sector of inclusion and participation of young refugees. Local practices that tackle the challenges that young refugees face in their lives exist and they can serve as inspiration for policy makers, youth workers, youth organisations, young people and researchers from other countries and regions in Europe.

The main aim of the workshops is to create a space for learning about approaches that youth work and youth policy use for supporting the inclusion and participation of young refugees.
