EU Presidency Conference "Heritage First! Towards a Common Approach for a Sustainable Europe"

A major conference entitled "Heritage First! Towards a Common Approach for a Sustainable Europe" was organised by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports in the framework of the Greek EU Presidency Conference. The event was held at the Byzantine and Christian Museum in Athens on 6 March 2014 and at the Acropolis Museum, Athens on 7-8 March 2014. The aim of the conference was to discuss the link between cultural heritage and sustainable development.

Claudia Luciani, Director of Democratic Governance and Gianluca Silvestrini, Head of the Managing Diversity Division, both speaked at the Conference. They presented the Council of Europe's approach and activities to promote democratic participation, management of diversity and socio-economic development based on heritage resources. They also contributed to linking theoretical debate with examples of the Council of Europe's good practice, to demonstrate the key role of cultural heritage in delivering sustainable development objectives.
