Study visits of Azerbaijani judge candidates

On 6-7 June and 21-22 June 2017, the Council of Europe organised two study visits to Strasbourg for a group of 63 judge candidates undergoing the preparatory training phase of the judicial selection process at the Academy of Justice of Azerbaijan.

The study visits aimed to provide the judge candidates with closer insight into the functioning of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), enabling them to understand better the subsidiarity principle of the Convention system and the link between their future efforts in terms of protection of human rights at national level and Strasbourg Court. During the visit participants heard presentations on various ECHR topics from the judges and staff of the Court’s Registry and representatives of the Secretariat who informed the group about functioning of other Council of Europe bodies.

The activities were organised in the framework of the Project on “Application of the European Convention on Human Rights and the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights in Azerbaijan” that is part of the Partnership for Good Governance for Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and Belarus and is funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe.
