Pilot project “Education for Democratic Citizenship and Human Rights: diversity of approaches”

From 11 to 12 March 2014 the Seminar on developing competences for Democracy and Human Rights took place in in Moscow, Russian Federation.

The objectives of the meeting were:

 

  1. to discuss the outcomes of the project "Education for Democratic Citizenship and Human Rights: diversity of approaches" organised in the framework of the EC/CoE Pilot Projects Scheme "Human Rights and Democracy in Action", with the participation of Belarus, Georgia, Lithuania and the Russian Federation;
  2. to share information on good practice, current challenges and future strategies for the development of competences for democracy and human rights;
  3. to make recommendations for the future work of the Council of Europe in the area of citizenship and human rights education.

The meeting was opened by Mr. Sergomanov - Deputy Head of Department, State policy in the field of general education of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation and was followed by two days of presentations and discussions for and between the participating countries. On day 1 the coordinators for citizenship and human rights education of the participating countries presented the results of the implementation of the pilot project and its potential impact in their respective contexts. 

Day 2 saw a series of experts in the fields of human rights and education share experiences in the Russian Federation and discuss the latest developments in the field of citizenship and human rights education in the participating countries of the pilot project.  Regional projects and programmes promoting the principles set out in the Charter on Education for Democratic Citizenship and Human Rights Education were also presented online to the participants.

The afternoon offered the opportunity for participants to visit the Medvedkovo Study Centre and to exchange views about tolerance and diversity with students and teachers from the college (for more information about the exchange of views, please click on following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0izNuuTsZRI&feature=youtu.be
